A synthetic pop language becomes visible
A. G. Cook, Hannah Diamond, SOPHIE and peers use digital surface as both sound and world-building.
PC MUSIC / SYNTHETIC SURFACE / INTERNET OVERSPEED · FIELD ARCHIVE 13
An intentionally unstable internet-born umbrella for exaggerated pop, extreme digital processing, synthetic texture and collisions between club, rap and experimental sound.
01 / THE CASE FILE
During the 2010s, PC Music artists, SOPHIE and connected collaborators treated commercial pop surfaces as material for abstraction. Extreme pitch, artificial timbre, compressed dynamics, abrupt edits and sincere melody could coexist without resolving the tension between critique and celebration.
The word hyperpop gained wider force through platform playlists around 2019, gathering earlier bubblegum-bass work with 100 gecs, digicore and many online micro-scenes. Queer and trans creators are central to the history, while the label's rapid expansion means no single tempo, voice treatment or maximalist preset defines it.

Timbres refuse naturalism while still carrying intimacy, desire and grief.
Processing shifts scale and character while keeping performance at the center.
Abrupt arrangement treats internet attention as a compositional material rather than a limitation.
Songcraft prevents experimental sound design from becoming only a demonstration.

Charli XCX collaborations demonstrate that experimental production can support direct pop writing.
A platform label accelerates discovery while folding together digicore, emo, EDM and earlier bubblegum bass.
Its techniques remain influential even as artists seek names beyond the playlist moment.

04 / MATERIAL SOUND / PRODUCER AS AUTHOR / OPEN FUTURE
SOPHIE made synthetic texture feel physical, intimate and newly possible. Her work belongs at the center without reducing a wide queer and online network to one figure.
