Hardcore bands deepen the metal vocabulary
Integrity, Earth Crisis and peers make breakdowns, metallic tone and scene ethics inseparable.
HARDCORE ETHIC / METAL RIFF / BREAKDOWN · FIELD ARCHIVE 95
Hardcore punk's scene culture and breakdowns fused with metal riffing, precision and increasingly melodic or extreme substyles.
01 / THE CASE FILE
In the late 1980s and 1990s, bands in several US hardcore networks combined metallic riffing, double-kick weight and darker harmony with hardcore's short-room performance, breakdowns and independent infrastructure. Metallic hardcore is therefore a scene history as much as a list of guitar traits.
Around the early 2000s, a melodic metalcore wave drew heavily from Swedish melodic death metal while retaining shouted vocals and breakdown architecture. Later djent, electronic and pop-facing branches expanded the label so far that metalcore now describes a family of approaches rather than one stable sound.
